Liz Costello of Princeton won the college women’s 3000-meter run championship in 9:35.01. The 5000 championship went to Costello’s freshman teammate, Ashley Higginson, in 16:22.56. Lindsay Donaldson of Yale (16:24.01) was second. Higginson won the Relays high school girls 3000 the past two years.
In the women’s Olympic Development 5K, Maria-Elana Calle withstood a last-lap challenge from Jennifer Donovan to win in 16:25.09. Donovan held on for second in 16:26.84, one-hundreth of a second ahead of Brooke Kish. Calle wins for the second year in a row and collects her third overall Penn title, having won the college women’s 5000 in 2000 while at Virginia Commonwealth.
Iona runners dominated the early going of the college men’s 5000, but it was ACC champion Stephen Furst of North Carolina State who came on strong at the end to win, in 13:49.19. Daniel Kanyaruhuru of Queens University (NC) was a step behind, in 13:49.29.
