Texas is looking for its second straight title in this event, and second of the year, having won the DMR on Friday.
The meet was running as much as 17 minutes ahead of schedule, so there’ll be a pause before this one gets underway.
And they’re off: Texas takes the early lead in what looks like a fairly easy pace. American, Virginia and Georgetown follow. About 2:07 for the first half mile. Virginia goes into the lead at the 1K mark. American, Texas and Georgetown are next. American kicks big with 300 to go and hands off first in 4:06.8. Iona, Michigan and Texas fare 20 meters back.
Eastern Kentucky moves into second, Cornell third after the first lap of Leg 2. After two laps, American’s lead is up to 30 meters. Texas is in the middle of the chase pack. After 3 laps the leads is now just 15 meters, but Texas catches the leader with 300 to go. American hands off in first 8:12.7 (4:05.9 split) with Texas half a step behind.
Michigan is third, the only team in contact with American and Texas now. After two laps Iona is fourth, in no man’s land, trailing the lead three by 20 meters and 20 meters ahead of fifth place. American still leads after three laps, with Texas and Michigan waiting patiently. The chase pack has swallowed up Iona. Michigan and Texas bolt past American with 200 to go. Texas leads at the last exchange in 12:21.4.
Texas and Michigan are running 1-2, 15 meters ahead of the pack. Iona leads the chase and just like yesterday the pack has caught back up to the leaders. With two laps to go it’s looking like it’ll be another mad dash to the tape. Georgetown is into second, right behind Texas with a lap to go. Virginia challenge sTexas for the lead, but with 150 meters to go Texas’ Leonel Manzano turns on the jets and cruises home first in 16:29.50. Manzano last 400 meters was 53.7. Virginia is second in 16:31.04.
