westmanMax Westman became the first Quaker to win the Penn Relays decathlon since George Munger did it back in 1932. Westman, who racked up 6,842 points, beat the field by more than 500 points.

“I just feel really proud that after all the hard work something goes right,” Westman said. “This year, finally being able to (compete), as a senior, it makes me really happy. I had a lot of my friends here cheering me on and had a lot of support from my family. It felt great.”

The last Quaker to win, Munger, became a Hall of Fame football coach for Penn. In the photo, Westman poses with Penn Relay Executive Director Dave Johnson (the one with the white hair).

North Carolina’s Gabby Gioia won the heptathlon.
