Friday was a big day for the Relays. In addition to a big crowd at Franklin Field, we had nearly 800,000 visitors to this blog and thepennrelays.com. Fans logged in from all 50 states (& DC) plus 86 coutries, including Qatar, Djibouti and the Isle of Man.

Speaking of this blog, if you’r wondering about today’s banner photo, here’s the scoop: In 1958 the Carnival honored four college seniors, each of whom had been a gold medalist in the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne, Australia. From the left, these greats were Bobby Morrow of Abilene Christian, Glenn Davis of Ohio State, Greg Bell of Indiana and Ron Delany of Villanova.

Morrow struck gold in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and anchored the championship 4×100-meter relay. Davis won the 400-meter hurdles, an honor he was to repeat in Rome four years later. Bell was the long jump victor, while Delany succeeded in capturing the 1,500-meter title.

Also in the photo are Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren, Harry Waibel, Penn president Gaylord P. Harnwell and Honorary Referee Thomas J. Hamilton (the athletics director at the University of Pittsburgh).
