University of Technology, Jamaica, was the fastest seed with 3:32.  We had a little bit of lightning delay but we’re back on track.

Blacksburg (VA) smashed the Penn Relays record in the girls DMR with a spectacular 11:38.69 clocking. That erases the 11:40.51 run by Vere Tech (Jamaica) all the way back in 1992 and is the ninth fastest time ever by an U.S. high school team.

College Women’s 4×400 Heats

The women’s 4×400 heats are off. In the first heat, Jamaica’s UTech pulled away from Texas with 200 meters to go for a 3:32.81–3:33.54 victory.
In Heat 2, Texas A&M came from behind to win in 3:33.06, with Oregon (3:36.12) and early leader Virginia Tech (3:37.34) finishing second and third.

Our first college championship, a highly anticipated event, is the rematch of the NCAA Championship between Tennessee and Oregon in the College Women’s DMR . . . . a great race where Tennessee won again.


Philadelphia Public Championship 4×400

To finish our afternoon session of 4×400’s, we have the traditional Philadelphia Public school heat.  The winner this year was Swenson High in 3:59.  William Penn of Philadelphia has won the HSG Championship many times.

The high school girls’ 4×400 heats went off 5 minutes ahead of schedule.

High School Girls 4x800 Heats

The four sections of the high school girls’ 4×800 are over and Jamaica’s Edwin Allen flirted with running sub-nine, before settling in at 9:01.

Chelsey Sveinsson of Greenhill School (Addison, Texas) blew the field away, opening up a huge lead early and never looking back. She clocked 4:46.85, good for #5 all-time at Penn. Thursday's Attendance: 24,315

Despite the cool, windy conditions, the fans came out for a great day of racing at Franklin Field. Thursday’s attendance was 24,315. That’s the fifth biggest crowd for a Thursday at Penn, and the best since 2006.
The record for a Thursday, by the way, is 25,189 in 2005.


High School Girls DMR Championship

Our first high school relay championship on the track is the girls’ DMR.  The record, 11:40 by Vere Tech of Jamaica, is from 1992.
At the first exchange, we have two teams – Monroe-Woodbury (NY) and Tatnall (DE), unofficially in 3:31.

Next up are the college women’s 4×4 qualifying races.
Texas Christian held off Miami (FL) down the stretch to win the first heat, 3:39.25 to 3:40.15.
University of Technology of Jamaica goes 3:34.99 to win the second heat over Texas A&M (3:36.19).

Women's College Pole Vault: LSU's Laurent Sets Record

Louisiana State freshman Rachel Laurent set a Penn Relays record in the college women’s pole vault, clearing 13 feet, 10-1/2 inches (4.23 meters). The previous record was 13-10 (4.22), set by Kansas’ Amy Linnen in 2005.
Laurent is the 2008 USATF Junior champion in the event and finished fifth at the NCAA Indoor championships in March. [...]

College Women's Distance Medley Championship

Duke gave it an early challenge, leading at the first exchange, but after that Tennessee took control and had it in the bag. Georgetown’s Maggie Infeld made it interesting, nearly catching Sarah Bowman in the final 200 meters, but the Lady Vols prevailed, 11:02.11 to 11:02.85.

With the high school girls 4×100 finally complete – we move to the college events.
LSU, our defending champion, wins the first heat in 44.66, with Texas Christian in 2nd, 45.29.
Texas A&M, which has the fastest time in the country, wins the 2nd heat in 43.80, with South Carolina 2nd in 45.27.
