The high school girls distance races provided a series of fast-paced thrills. For the second year in a row, we had a Penn Relays record in the girls distance medley relay. In an upstate/downstate New York battle, Fayetteville-Manlius held on against a late charge from North Shore to win in 11:34.46. That eclipses the 11:38.69 mark set by Blacksburg (Va) in 2010. North Shore (11:36.10) was also under the old record. F-M’s anchor, Jillian Fanning, ran wire to wire, splitting 4:51.39, just enough to stay ahead of North Shore’s Samantha Nadel, who blitzed a 4:45.84, the third-fastest 1600m split in Penn Relays history.

In the girls mile, Angel Piccirillo of Homer Center (Pa), defended her title in 4:48.83, the 10th best time ever at the Carnival. She was pushed all the way to the line by Kelsey Margey of Harborfields (NY), who ran 4:49.38.

And the girls 3000 was a thriller, with Haley Pierce of Tatnall (Del) coming out on top of a three way battle, crossing the tape in 9:16.35, the second fastest ever at the Penn Relays — and No. 8 on the all-time U.S. high school list! Aisling Cuffe of Cornwall (NY) set the early pace and put on a bold move with a lap to go, but couldn’t match Pierce’s kick. Cuffe was rewarded with a 9:19.24, the third best in Penn history. Waverly Neer of Culver (Ind) took third in 9:22.32, now No. 4 all-time at the Carnival.
